Three ways to set the size
- Percentage — 50% halves both width and height (a quarter of the pixels). The simplest way to shrink a batch of photos by the same amount.
- Fit within — the image is scaled down, keeping its proportions, until it fits inside the box: 1280×1280 turns a 4000×3000 photo into 1280×960 and a portrait photo into 960×1280. Images already smaller are left as they are.
- Exact size — exactly the width and height you type. If the proportions differ from the original the image is stretched; to change the shape without distortion, crop it first.
Why resize?
A modern phone photo is 12–50 megapixels — far more than a screen can show. Resizing to 1920 or 1280 pixels on the long side makes files 5–20× smaller for email, chat, websites and upload forms, with no visible difference on screen. Resampling uses a Lanczos filter with proper anti-aliasing, which keeps fine detail and avoids the jagged edges and moiré of quick browser scaling.
Resizing and format are independent: keep the original format, or save smaller photos straight to WebP or JPG. EXIF metadata (including GPS location) is not copied to the resized files.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Resizing runs with JavaScript and WebAssembly running in your browser tab. Your files are read from your device and the results are created on your device; nothing is sent to gratistools.be or anyone else, which is also why there are no queues, daily limits or watermarks. See the privacy page.
