Choosing a resolution
- 72 DPI — screen size, for previews and thumbnails. An A4 page becomes 595×842 pixels.
- 150 DPI — a good default for sharing and slides (A4: 1240×1754).
- 300 DPI — print quality, for reusing pages in documents (A4: 2480×3508).
- 600 DPI — for zooming into fine detail in drawings or small print. Files get large; very large pages are capped at about 40 megapixels to protect your browser's memory.
JPG, PNG or WebP?
JPG is best for pages with photos and is accepted everywhere. PNG is lossless: ideal for pages of text, charts and diagrams, where JPG can add faint smudges around letters. WebP gives the smallest files for both, and is supported by all current browsers and most apps.
Pages are rendered with the same engine Firefox uses to display PDFs (pdf.js), including embedded fonts. Pages are named
document-page-01.jpg and so on, so they sort correctly; with more than one page you can download them all as a ZIP.
Password-protected files work too: you're asked for the password, the file is unlocked in your browser, and the result is saved without a password. Files that only restrict printing or copying are opened automatically.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Rendering runs with JavaScript and WebAssembly running in your browser tab. Your files are read from your device and the results are created on your device; nothing is sent to gratistools.be or anyone else, which is also why there are no queues, daily limits or watermarks. See the privacy page.
